Fantasy Baseball Advice

5x5 10 temas - i was offered pierre for burnett. i need SB, and have some decent SP. is burnett too much to pay for someone with such a bad season?

Posted by Anonymous | 1:18 PM

Pierre may have had a slow start, but that went away a while ago. Over the last month Juan is hitting .367 with 8 stolen bases. In fact, only Reyes has a better average out of everyone in the league with at least 5 stolen bases in that period of time. This should come as no surprise, as Pierre is a career .300 hitter with over 100 SB in the previous 2 seasons. On June 9th his batting average was only .230, and most people, much like you, gave up on him. In the 30 games since then, he has brought his average up to .280 by going 49 for 134 with 12 SB. Meanwhile, Burnett is 1-3 this season, with a 4.25 ERA. While I do expect that to improve, if you need SB, have extra SP, and your only price to get Pierre would be Burnett, I don't see why you even had to ask this question. I'd do it in a second.

so if teixeira isn't back, is he still a top 10 first baseman? how would you rank the top 10 first basemen?

Posted by Frank | 2:59 PM

Hopefully since Teix has gone 1 for 12 without a home run since his 3 HR games, I don't have to explain anymore why I don't think the old Teix is back. As for my top 10 first basemen, that's pretty tough this season, as many players you could make both a strong case for and against (ie. Delgado and Lee). As of right now, however, these are my ten guys who should qualify at first base in your fantasy league (not necesarily positionally there right no, or someone you should use at 1B instead of another position where they qualify):

1. A Pujols
2. D Ortiz
3. J Thome
4. L Berkman
5. R Howard
6. A Dunn
7. C Utley
8. J Giambi
9. P Konerko
10.N Garciapara

Morneau, Swisher, V Mart and Johnson would be in the next group, followed by Teix, Delgado, Lee and Kent.

teixeira hit three homers tonight. did he manage to fix his swing over the past week? it seems to have worked nicely! however, when you look at his stats you see that he actually got 31 doubles in the first half which should shatter his career best. i guess the ball was just dropping a little short this year. hopefully he goes on a bit of a run now. run on my point? you bet!

Kaz Matsui gets a home run in his first at bat every year, but based on that would you trust him to be your power hitter? I don't think one game means that Teix's power is back. He should get about 5 more home runs than he had in the first half, and keep up his average. A solid player to have, for sure, but I wouldn't be expecting the old Teix to be back based on one game. Even Erick Hinske had a stretch recently where he went 8 for 14 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in 4 games, but I'll wager that you didn't pick him up based on it. All that said, 30HR, 100RBI and a .290 batting average is nothing to sniff at, especially with all the doubles. Teix is solid, but he's not even close to a first round pick anymore.

there is a guy in our league that is curious about a trade but afraid to post it here. let's call him "magic man". he is doing quite well in the hitting categories and has been offered rivera for beltran. since you know the league, do you think he should do that deal?

Posted by Tank Roberts | 10:20 AM

Can he afford to give up HR and RBI? Does he have a suitable OF replacement? Is there room for him to go up in saves? On the surface, I'd say he's not likely to benefit from such a deal, only because I doubt he has a suitable OF replacement for Beltran. If he has Ibanez or someone on his bench, however, that's a different story. If the need is there, I would do the deal, but I'd try to get a 2nd tier OF back in the deal as well, in exchange for a mediocre closer. And as always Beltrans injury worries play a factor as well. This trade is close enough to even that it all depends on personal preference and need.

the second place team in my league is desperate for SB and could use some SV too. i have offered him two deals. in the first deal, i offered hanley (for SB), dempster (for SV), and thames (for HR) for hafner. while it doesn't look good on the surface, i think he needs SB enough to consider this. the other offer was hanley and thames for sizemore. am i "mr. lowball" or do you think i am actually trying to help him?

Mr. Lowball.

helton for thames?

Posted by Anonymous | 10:46 AM

Helton had a slow start to the season, but come on. This is comparing a career .252 hitter to a career .334 hitter. Even with the slow start, Helton has already caught Thames in average (way higher of late), is way ahead in runs, has huim in RBI's, and can only go up from here. This is a no-brainer.

wright for utley?

Posted by Anonymous | 12:11 PM

You might think this is a tough one based on their numbers - Utley has 12 more runs and Wright has 21 more RBI's, but outside of that they are almost identical - but if you look at it positionaly it's fairly easy. Qualifying at 2B you have Soriano and Utley, and then it's a fairly significant step down to Lopez and Figgins, and then another big step down to Uggla and Weeks. After that you're looking at Phillips, Sanchez and taking a chance on Jeff Kent. In other words, this is the weakest position in the game, and in Utley you have a player who would be solid even if the game wasn't positional. That's priceless. At 3B, Cabrera, Rolen, ARod, Nomar and even Atkins aren't that far off of Wright compared to what you'd no doubt be upgrading to at 2B. In other words, unless you have Soriano I don't see why you wouldn't be going for Utley, even at the extreme cost of Wright. The way people would look at it, though, you could probably also get an upgrade at another position in the same deal.

please write a post about jorge sosa if you have time.

I don't know who WhoreHey slept with to land the closer role in Atlanta, but there's no way it can last. Since taking over the job he has blown 2 out of 5 save opportunities, and has given up 5 runs in 5.1 innings. Even as far as Atlanta options go, WhoreHey isn't the best choice. How someone with a 2-10 record, 5.40 ERA and only .6 strike outs per inning is given the closer role is beyond me, and it just can't last. Even if it does, the numbers he puts up might hurt you more than the 10 saves he'll pick up the rest of the way.

and possibly a beltran vs. ichiro one.

Posted by Tank Roberts | 3:01 PM

If you ask me, these two players have about equal value. You'll read more about Beltran this year, mostly because of the contrast between how well he's performing this year versus last. As far as a pure power hitter goes, they don't get much better than Beltran. On the other hand, not many players capable of 60 stolen bases ever hit .350. Basically, the question comes down to if you need stolen bases and average, or if you need RBI's and home runs. And if you do need the power, are you willing to take the risk on Beltran staying healthy. He's a little too risky for my blood, but his potential reward is worth it to the right buyer.
